October 29, 2026 — Ice report

Local observations from Carolyn Haggard · October 29, 2026

We started to see ice forming in the shallow coves on Flat Lake last weekend, and then warmer weather kind of put it on hold. We had a couple nights earlier this week in the low 20s, though, and yesterday morning revealed a fair amount of ice forming on the west end of Flat Lake and in Philpott’s Cove. But this morning’s low of 34° with rain had melted most of what had formed.

Most of the boats on the lakes have been pulled out and put away for the season, but those of us on islands or without road access will wait until we’re breaking ice to get out.

The weather for the next few days is forecast to keep temperatures a little above freezing, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
